What is the best way to go from valencia city to alicante airport for a 10am flight?

if you drive on the toll road it will take you approx 3 hours. Alicante airport is actually just outside the city (going south) Its a pretty long drive though for a 10 am flight. Why not stay in a cheap hotel overnight and then get a cab to the airport, this would save all your worries about arriving in time.
