What is the best way to improve boxing footwork?

I know jump roping is one way, shadowboxing is another, and I know running is the other method. I shadowbox, however I'm unsure which method is better- jump roping or running. I'm 6' 210lbs, so being a heavyweight my footwork is not that great because I'm bigger. But what would you guys suggest? Thanks

  1. if you really want to know, DANCING!

dance to the rhythm of the song.

good music i.e. one with a good beat, (not rap), but a good medium paced rock/metal song or even some good house/dance music (NO KIDDING). I suggest you just practice going round slowly in figure eights and do some variations (with some joggers of course; you'll need good support on your ankles/knees since youre a bit heavy like me, im 5ft11, 210)

My footwork has actually improved by doing these exercises. I mean it doesn't work for everyone, cos some people can't get the rhythm but it sure h**l is effective once you get a grasp of it.

some examples of good music that I use:

    - thin lizzy-boys are back in town; chinatown, don't believe a word

    - judas priest-riding on the wind; you've got another thing coming, screaming for vengeance.

    - survivor-burning heart, eye of the tiger

most 80s metal with the steady beat and rhythm

    - house music with a basic medium thump also works good.

i wish you luck. and I hope you try my method.

  2. Well like the other guy said, you should jump rope everyday and move around a lot while your hitting the heavy bag and sparring. You can also tie a rope to your ankles which helps you to remember to have the right distance in between your feet so you don't fall off balance when you're moving or throwing your combinations.

  3. When doing bag-work constantly move around as if you are fighting a real opponent.  It's tempting to just stand there but you won't improve.  You could try the Slam Man as well.

It's a human shaped electronic punching bag with targets that light up which tell you where to punch.

It's better than an ordinary punching bag as it can provide combinations for you and it's much better for motivation because it's more fun.  It basically acts as your very own boxing trainer.

I've got one of my own and it comes with gloves and an instructional DVD in the basics.  A human shaped target provides a more realistic training regime as well.

  4. Skipping rope,Dancing and shadow boxing constantly moving in all angles :)***
