Your credit score is made up of various components, the two largest of which are payment history and your debt-to-credit ratio.  So the best way to improve your score is to make all your payments on time and pay down your credit card balances to less than 50 percent of your total credit (less than 30 percent is better).  This is why you shouldn't close down credit cards you've paid off (it lowers your total available credit).
