What is the best way to keep dark clothing from fading?

I saw a commercial for Tide advertising the "Total Care" product. Does it work? Do you have any other tips.

A friend bought me a Mickey Mouse sweatshirt in the boldest colors I'd ever seen. The first time I washed it it came out faded as though I'd washed it a hundred times. We exchanged it and washed it in a cup of salt, inside out, and in cold water. My friend assured me it would set the color. She was right and I washed it as I would anything else after that and it held it's color for a long time. I don't know if the salt trick will work on a second or third washing but it's certainly worth a shot. Good Luck.

Rinse with a cup of vinegar in cold water. Let dry and then wash as usual. The vinegar will set the colors.
