What is the best way to keep grass seed moist when it's out in the texas sun all day?

This is my second time trying to grow grass seed on bare spots in my yard. The first time, hardly any of it actually grew. I would water it pretty thoroughly once a day, but I think that in the afternoon out in the texas sun and heat, the soil and seed gets too dry and that's why it's not growing. I can't water all day, I have to work! Anyway I was wondering if anyone knew something i could put out that could help keep moisture in the soil so the seeds don't dry up and die. Ideas?

  1. First, be sure to plant during the correct season for the type of grass you want to grow.  Cool season grasses like bluegrass and fescue need to be planted in cooler times of the year.  Warm season grasses like Bermuda or buffalo grass need warmer temperatures, but both types *must be kept constantly damp*.    So you're going to need sprinklers on timers that can run multiple times a day, and you're going to need some mulch.

Check with your local extension office to find out when to try to germinate whatever species you're trying to grow.  You may have to work on just sections at a time.

  2. Have an irrigation system put in or simply get soaker hoses, you can leave them on a slow drip while you are at work.

  3. I had some bare spots myself and the first time I tried it didn't work...the second time I placed a layer of starter soil, sprinkled the seeds and topped it with another layer of starter soil and it worked. I think by placing the soil over the seeds allowed it to not dry out and help get it established. I had to water it once in the morning and again at night. It wasn't an overnight success, but with some patience it will work. Good luck!

  4. put hay over the seed it retains moister and keeps the sun off the seeds
