What is the best way to keep/store onions?

When we buy onions from the store, I usually put them in the fridge.

I just picked the ones that have been growing in my garden, cleaned them, and now want to know what is the best way to store them so they last a long time.

I have so many of them, I want them to keep as long as possible.

So is it better to keep them in he fridge, or somewhere else?

Hang them in a dry place in pantyhose.  Drop one onion into the foot part and tie a knot.  Then drop another one in and tie a knot.  Keep going until you have a string of onions not touching each other because of the knot.  

As you use one, cut the pantyhose leaving the knot in place to hold the other onions in.  They will last a long time this way.
