I am teaching myself German using CDs and a book.  But practicing with a German speaker is the best way, after studying.

immersion is best, by that I mean not only take classes, but live in an environment where you can practise it daily (Austria, Germany, eastern Switzerland)

Do not fear the daunting task and get to work. Do not be afraid to make mistakes. Attempt to be like native speakers: forget you speak English and imitate their sound and their intonation.

Although we are hard wired for language, most of us haven't learnt a language since we were children and so the task is rather extreme. When you were a child, you had people always available to correct you. You weren't afraid to make mistakes. You started with a clean slate and had no problem copying others.

It may seem like an intellectual exercise, but it actually involves your whole body. Feel the words, feel the intonation, feel what you say and act it out. Don't make the mistake of being shy or of being stuck on your own language.
