What is the best way to make fake, but realistic, blood?

what ever it is must be thick enough to take out of the mouth and put on something but liquidy enough to spit out and have it look real. can you help me out?

corn syrup and food coloring is the traditional recipe, I believe. There are some good recipies out there.
