What is the best way to meet locals in the U.K.?

I'm going to Edinburgh, Scotland next Spring Semester to study and I'm wondering how I can make friends with locals? Please be competely honest! Let me know likes and dislikes...things that offend people...random facts like that!

  1. Try talking to them.  T he Scotch are very friendly.


  2. don't talk too loudly or brag (this must be the thing we hate most about Americans) ... remember you're in SCOTLAND, not England or Britain or UK ... tell everyone how wonderful you think the place is ... be prepared to laugh at yourself when they "pull your leg" ... don't moan about the weather (the locals are allowed to moan, if you moan they will think you're criticising the place) ... if you're in a college or university many of the people you come across are likely to be foreigners like yourself, and also Edinburgh is a multi-cultural city

Go to the pub don't call football soccer and support Scotland over England at everything and try to learn local dialect like aye means yes, na mean no, aye right means not likely and numbty means idiot .Practice drinking cos you will drink loads .Scotland is great country and we are very friendly people you will have a great time as long as you don't mind rain.
