What is the best way to prepare for a biotechnology degree and a job along those lines?

Im curious about the opportunities there are in CA for people who get a degree in biotechnology.

  1. The best way to get into the biotechnology business is to get a PhD degree in a relevant subject.  With a lesser degree, you are working for someone who has the doctorate.

    In any event, you will need six to eight chemistry courses, three quarters of physics, three semesters of calculus, general biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, biophysics, anatomy, physiology, microbiology, pharmacology, .....

    If you can, get a PhD from UC San Francisco.  I loved it there.


  2. Get real lab experience. For at least a year or two, and make sure you have worked with animals. The best place for biotech is CA, so no worries there. Best bets are San Francisco and San Diego, that's two of the top three regions for biotech/pharma in the US. Los Angeles only has Amgen, so kinda limited in jobs.
