What is the best way to preserve plant speciments from a forrest, like mushrooms, leaves, and bugs?

  1. Formaldehyde works pretty well. Cheap too.

Rather than depopulating your forest, why not use a digital camera and "capture" your specimens that way.  But if you think you need to collect actual specimens, each different kind of specimen will need a specific preservation technique.  For example, you would need a plant press and dryer for plant specimens.  Fungi would be best preserved in a fluid preservative.  Insects are usually pinned and dried.  There are entire books on collecting methods, preservation techniques and display methods.  

    Most digital cameras have a wide range of lens settings allowing macrophotography as well as telephoto settings.  A nice Power Point slide show of all the creatures you can capture could be very exciting especially if you include video clips of birds and mammals of the forest!
