  1. If the panels are in working order, I doubt many people are throwing them away.

  2. I've got 10 used collectors on my roof. They are occasionally available from company's selling solar equipment or scrap yards.

Many collectors became available when the tax rebates from the Carter era ended and the systems required more upkeep and expense than the owners were willing to provide. Mine came from a school.

Most recently I came across a large group of used panel at this web site. Note that this was some time ago and I have no idea if they still have them or they were salvaged as scrap copper.

Other things to think about are that used collectors may be damaged. They may leak or may have been neglected and had their antifreeze become very acidic which can corrode the units (just things to think about).

  3. Find a huge building that uses them that's being torn down, and make an offer on the panels.

Advertise that you want to buy them, and as they trickle in, put them in a container, and when it's full, sell it to your friend.

I rather doubt that solar panels are collected en masse like this very regularly: they'll tend to be replaced piecemeal if they fail, and, given the expense, usually there will be plans to install them for the long term or re-use them elsewhere if a building is being demolished.  I suspect the only way to get them is to advertise that you want them, keep in contact with scrap and salvage operations that deal with building demolition (and don't expect functioning panels through this route), and build them up piecemeal yourself.
