What is the best way to purify sea water if traveling by kayak? Need a simple, reliable method.?

  1. To the best of my knowledge...

    That would require a desalinator. The only problem is unless you're also carrying along a couple of marine 12V batteries, you'll need a hand-powered one. Reverse osmosis desalination takes a lot of pressure. For a hand-operated unit that means MANY pump strokes to produce a drinkable amount. For example, using Katadyn's Survivor 06, you'd need something like 2400 strokes of the pump for an hour (40 per minute) to get about 0.9 liter of water. OK in a survival situation, but not how I'd want to spend my kayaking time. (It's also $$$.)

    You'd be better off either carrying all you water (8 pounds per gallon), or paddling up to some freshwater sources and using something like General Ecology's First Needs Deluxe water purifier. That's what I use backpacking and it works like a charm.

    (If someone else knows more than this or can correct me, I'd be happy to know about it myself. I'll be checking back for other answers.)
