Question:

What is the best way to quit a job?

I have worked at this place for over 2 years.

I am out on maternity leave and I just found a night job so that I can be home with the baby. I am not sure how to tell my boss that I won't be coming back. Do I do it over the phone? Email? Do I go in and see him?

  1. I wouldn't eMail him.  Phone is probably fine if its a pain to go in, but going in would be best if its not to much trouble.  Either way write up a nice letter explaining why you need to leave.  Also clear with them exactly when your last day is and stuff like that (maybe not an issue if you are on maternity leave), and just go do it.  Best luck with the new job.

  2. Just go and talk to him.  I am sure he will understand.  With you on maternity leave, should make it easier.  If you were not on leave, then you'd have to or at least should, give a two week notice.  Being you already on leave, you can tell him now, or at least two weeks before your leave is up, sooner the better since you already know you have found a job that will work best for you.   Any employer should understand that!

At least your leaving under good terms, with your employer!

And Congrats and good luck on expecting a baby!

  3. Be sure to write a formal two-weeks notice to your supervisor.  Don't use e-mail because there is a chance it can be lost.  It may be a good idea to meet with him/her in addition to writing the letter.  Explain that you had a rewarding experience working with them but for personal reasons, you have found employment elsewhere to work a different shift.

  4. Face to face is best, and be honest about your reasons, thank your boss for the opportunity for working with the company and with he/she. Make sure to schedule an exit interview with human resources if it's your company's policy to do so. Always leave on positive terms, you never know if you will return or when you will require positive job reference from a past employer. Good luck with the new baby and the new job!

  5. Whenever I had to quit a job for whatever reason, I would always book an appointement with my boss and tell it to their face (in a nice way because leaving on bad terms is a VERY bad thing no matter what) and they all wished me the best of luck and that if I ever needed my old job back, to go see them... Face to face is better hun

  6. Go and see him and give him at least 2 weeks notice. Also, offer to train the new hire. Don't burn bridges. You may need a job reference or another day job in the future.
