What is the best way to "punish" my kids for cussing?

Question

1) Pour Tabasco sauce in their dirty little mouths

2) Wash their mouths very clean with Herbal Essence

3) Have them write the word over and over 2,000 times

4) Stand them in a Corner 1 hour for every bad word

5) Throw away all their makeup/curling iron

6) Hide the left shoe on all their shoes for a week

7) Cut their bangs off while they are sleeping

Obviously none of these are effective punishments as they will just cause your children to resent you. Simply encourage them not to curse and tell them it makes people sound unintelligent. If you punish them in the extreme then it will simply make them rebel against you and they'll end up  cursing "like a drunken sailor". Giving them such a strong reaction would enforce the idea that it's something they want to do more to p**s mom off for being mean.

Depends on how they used the word, if it was mid sentence without them realising until after, then there isn't really much you can do as most people use cuss words at somepoint, just because your child doesn't do it in front of you, doesn't mean they don't do it at all, because they will be doing it.

I'm 23, and I don't swear infront of my mother still, but use all sorts of words when im out and about on my daily adventures... Ask your children for the respect, rather than punishing them, if that fails and they tell you to F off, then take there mobile phone of them... Imagine if you didnt have yours... Tell them until they respect you and do not swear in your presents, they cant have their phone. It should work...

If that don't work, put them up for adoption.

Why would you put chemicals into your childs mouth? That would in turn make them bitter against you, and gaurantee when you turn your back, they will be directing those swear words they used right at you. Having them write the word is just going to make it more used in their vocabulary.

I hope you don't have kids, based on your punishments, as most of them would be considered harassment.

What I do is have them pay me out of their allowance for the week on what they do is bad. They don't like the fact that they are losing their money.

Well, in my day it was a back hand to the mouth..I am not advocating that, I am just saying that is how it was handled.  Ground them from their cell phones or activities, friends, etc.  Although, number 2 isn't bad!

Personally, out of all of those, i have to say i love the shoe one. I'll have to try that!

However, (and you may have already done this) be sure to explain to them why they are not allowed to cuss. And IT IS NOT AN AGE THING. Don't cuss in front of them, or ever really, that's like endorsing it. be sure to tell your spouse too. Then explain to them how whenever they cuss it makes them sound really stupid. only people who don;t have a better way to express themselves cuss. Tell them to use creative substitutes. From personal experience, those subs catch on really quickly at school.

And yeah, i would definitely say hide their left shoes. Don't tell them though, they'll be going crazy wondering what happened to them!

No Tabasco - it's cruel and can destroy their taste buds. No Herbal Essence - despite the word "herbal" it is still poison. Writing the word 2000 times or having a 1 hour timeout is a bit of overkill, don't you think? Hiding or destroying their belongings or hair is just childish and petty.

To deal with swearing you basically have two choices. With little kids, the best bet is to ignore it. Calmly tell them that the word is unacceptable, then ignore it. Deal with the behaviors - if they are having a tantrum, fine, punish that, but ignore the swearing. When they are older, you need to come up with a LOGICAL, REASONABLE consequence and give it each time they use the word. Kids who earn an allowance might respond to a fine of 10 cents each time they use an inappropriate word or are rude. Some kids might respond to a REASONABLE number of sentences, like 10 times "I will not use inappropriate language." each time they swear. Kids who love their video games might respond best to losing 10 minutes of video game time each time they swear. As the saying goes, you have to find their currency - find what will motivate them to change their behavior.

uuum what comes out of ur kids mouth is their own thing.  tell them that its not good to say words like that and that u r ashamed of them.  tell them that if u hear that word one more time, you will take away their favorite things to do (such as nintendo ds or tv, curling iron or straightener, etc.) for a week.

I think I would hit them where it seems to hurt-make them pay for it. Also, where are they learning it? My children (teens) hear it at school all the time but don't do it as I raised them with the idea that it is low class and one shouldn't use cuss words as verbs. That you should act classier and smarter-it makes you look stupid. I know every word in the book and I'm sure I've let one rip on occasion but one always apologizes and states how bad that was-shows a lack of self control. In other words don't just punish-explain and teach too, but maybe make them pay into a pot when they do and figure out how someone could earn the pot of funds at the end of 6 months or so---
