What is the best way to reduce swelling after wisdom tooth extraction?

I just got my four impacted wisdom tooth removed on monday.

Now I look like a chipmunk!

I really need to be back to normal by sunday. I applied ice packs the first 24 hours, I'm eating soft foods, I'm rinsing, and I'm taking all my antibiotics.

Now what to do?

I'm doing the whole moist heat thing, heated up damp rags as my dentist suggested.

Any more suggestions to rid me of this dental pain swollen nightmare?

  1. ice/cold is better for swelling, take ibuprofen for inflamed jaw and muscles take it as directed for few days if your able to. no rinsing. it can cause the blood clot to dislodge, make it worse. work your jaw open n close and massage your cheeks a little bit to keep the circulation going.

    good luck...

  2. ice! i had the EXACT same problem as you. it was terrible and hilarious at the same time. you will be better after a week. i promise. use the rags they gave you and pay attention to if he suggested ice or not. some like ice some dont. just take the drugs they gave you and you will be fine. dont worry !

  3. Umm I can't really tell you from my experience, cuz I had no swelling. But the best thing to do is probably just keep icing. You can also take Motrin, which helps with swelling and pain.
