I purchased some carpet that had just been pulled from a new home. The owner of the carpet had it folded over itself several times in a very chaotic fashion, I didn't think anything of it. When I took it home and unraveled it I saw that it very badly creased - pretty much everywhere.

I left it out in the sun for about 30 minutes to soften it up but I still have the creases everywhere. I ended up rerollingg it (with no folds) and it's being stored for the time being.

What is the best way to remove a lot of creases in new carpet?

  1. You have already done it.  Unroll it and leave it in the hot sun for a few hours.  Roll it up with the backing to the inside, that way if there is any curling from you storing it, it well curl down instead of up.

  2. Creases can be remove by stretching.

There is a tool to install carpets, that the installer use stretch the carpet.

It's a claw and a kicker to stretch the carpet with.

  3. If this carpet is a Berber (loops) - unfortunately it may have been damaged.  Berbers are not to be creased.

It sounds like you have done everything else the right way.

Suggestion: Have the carpet installed with a stretcher or knee kicker either professionally or DIY.  Hopefully if you have any creases left or damage rows (if Berber) they will be hidden under furniture.

  4. Rolling it up is the best you can do. Most carpets that size are stretched when installed and the carpet tack strips around the edge hold it tight.

  5. Iron It
