What is the best way to remove alders without hurting the land

I'm not sure what you mean, exactly, by 'hurting the land'.  Perhaps you could clarify that.  Around here at least, alders are considered just large weeds. You take them down when they get big enough to be in your way or they're about to fall down on something that matters. Just cut them down, leave them where they lie or cut them up and take them away or use them for firewood.
