I have build up from hairspray on my dresser and night stand. I have tried murphys oil and orange glow. The wood is shiny and I would like to keep it that way and get rid of the gunk.

  1. try sugar soap to get the hairspray off then use a good bee's wax to feed the wood then polish

  2. Rubbing alcohol, then use the murphys oil!!!

  3. I have the same problem on my bathroom floor. I've found the only thing that really works is to soak the floor with warm soapy water for a few minutes, then scrub on my hands and knees.  Sometimes I need to do this a few times before all the hairspray is removed.  Stay away form drying agents like alcohol. I made this mistake on a wood table.  It dried and discolored the wood and I had to sand and restain the table.

You also want to make sure the wood is sealed before leaving water on it for too long.  You might want to test this technique on a small corner of your dresser before doing the entire thing.

Once you have it clean, then apply the Murphy's or Orange glow  -- it will protect the wood and make removal easier next time.

Another thing you might consider to protect the dresser is to have a piece of glass cut to fit the top.  Then you could use an ordinary glass cleaner to remove the hairspray in the future(and it will protect the wood from other ordinary wear and tear). Good luck.

  4. i little bit of goof off, not to much you will ruein the Gloss, just get a damp rag and a little bit of goof off

  5. you may wipe the affected area with WD-40.
