  1. Its faster and easier just to change the complete axle assembly. They do make a cheap boot that is split in the middle and they are not very good.

  2. I have done it twice. The best way is to buy a new boot, not expensive. It will come with new grease. Take the axle out and remove the old boot and take the joint apart and clean all the old grease out of it. That way you also clean out all of the dirt that has gotten mixed in with the grease. If you don't clean the dirt out it will grind away at the joint till it fails. If the boot has been torn for a long time it might already have excessive wear. When you get the grease all cleaned out and back together you can tell then if it's worn.

They make a boot that goes on like a zipper and don't have to take the axle out but you will still have the dirt in the joint. A new boot is much cheaper than a new axle. If the joint is bad you would have had to take it out any way so you are half way to replacing the axle. Good luck.

  3. you can buy those split boots and you don,t have to pull the axle, but i don,t like them. the best way is just pull the axle and put a new axle in.

  4. Preferrably have the cv removed by a pro & do the job right. But in the short term, there is a two part boot that you can buy at the parts store that will be ok for a little while.

  5. your best bet is to replace the whole shaft at the same time. if the boot is torn, the mileage is there and the lubricant is already contaminated. i tried that rout years ago only to develop a load joint after wards. i had to pull it back off and replace it.
