if you know a little bit of recent history, i find that reading the newspaper or a magazine like time or newsweek helps a lot. you learn current events as well as how such events contribute to the global political atmosphere as a whole. time magazine is probably a good place to start since it has little blurbs that aren't very long but you can still learn a lot from.
