in the fall i pick all my green tomatoes before the first hard frost. i have heard several ways of ripening them but i want some more input. i don't have a cold storage or root cellar but one room in our house does stay colder than the rest. do they need to be kept in the dark? should i wrap them in anything?

  1. place them in a brown paper bag and keep them on the counter

  2. Leave them out on the counter to ripen naturally, Or You can put them in a plain brown paper bag to ripen.

  3. I'm not certain this works with green tomatoes, but it does for red ones and I'm pretty sure it works on most heirloom varieties. Place the tomatoes in a bowl with a red apple or two, cover with plastic wrap and some chemicals in the apple (natural ones) will ripen the tomatoes. I think...Good luck!

  4. wrap them in newspaper and keep away from heat

I assume you have more than you will eat right away.

  5. Keeping them in a paper bag is the best way to ripen them. I grew up on a farm, this really works.

  6. Try to go and give more water if your plant start dying give more soil and give more food and sunlight.
