What is the best way to say goodbye to your family if you are leaving to study abroad for four months?

i'm going to spain and i really want to do something nice for my family before i leave. they took me out to eat and i was able to get them all to a sears portrait studio to take a family picture, but it doesn't seem to have brought out any comments or emotions yet. i know they will miss me, but i want to let them know that i love them and will miss them dearly without just "saying it" you know?

Go camping or something, do something with them that you did when you were a kid. That always brings back memories.

Why don't you make an advent calendar type thing, where every week that you're away they can open something (an envelope with a chocolate and letter in it from a box, or a packet hanging from a mobile inside).  You can write a different something that you will miss about them in every note.  Don't wait for comments and emotions, just know in yourself that every week they will have them.
