Question:

What is the best way to soak my horses feet?

I have 5 horses that my farrier suggested we help moisturize their feet. Over the counter products are not very successful from my experience. So soaking was the suggestion from my farrier. He recommended building a soaking pit (shallow hole filled with a tarp, sand and water.) I also read to have them stand on a few layers of wet carpet. Any other ideas? Thanks!

  1. Whatever you choose to soak their feet in(Mud, water, etc) you need to make sure yuo apply horseflex or something  equivalent to help seal in the moisture.

  2. Yes, just keep overflowing your water tank outside and they will soak themselves, several times a day.

  3. You could a tar looking product called reducine. when applied to the coronet bands it promotes healthy growth and helps to reduce cracks and brittleness.

  4. I always soaked my horses feet in a large rectangular basin. It was plastic and was textured inside to prevent slippage. It was convenient because I could just leave it in the washrack and when I need it it was always ready to use...and easy to clean. The only trick is getting the horses to walk in it the first couple of times but after that most of them enjoy the experience...good luck ! :)

  5. no, but i just got 2 points!

  6. if your horses are willing to put their foot in a small bucket, you can try that method. Otherwise, turn on a hose and hold your horses foot there for several minutes. Hope this helps.

  7. I agree with Bobbi - if you make mud, they will come. And stand. And roll. And dig. And have fun, in the mud :) They have to come by the water trough often enough.
