What is the best way to solder NiMH batteries together?

I am trying to solder 4 1.2V NiMH batteries together end to end to make a battery stick. What is the best way to do this? I tried melting the solder with the soldering iron on one battery and then trying to jam the other battery on real quick, but this was a horrible failure. Do i need a different tip, or solder, or any suggestions welcome.

I am not sure that soldering batteries together is a good idea. The heat could compromise their integrity and eventually cause damage to you or your property. Sorry, I don't have a better  answer.

What is the purpose of soldering them together. If we know what the ultimate use is maybe there is an alternative to soldering.

do not try to solder directly to the battery.

Get battery holders at an electronics store and solder to them, then plug the batteries into the holders.

Solder won't adhere well to the coating on battery terminals. Remove the coating with sandpaper and use wires to make the joint. I cannot see you will do what you are trying by sticking them together.

Be careful not to over heat it.
