What is the best way to step in front of a train?

It is a poor choice for a speedy exit, with no guarantee of winding up other than a stump, which is probably a far sight worse off than anyone contemplating doing so.

But, while we are on the subject lets talk about how to safely cross the tracks close to STANDING equipment.

Allow a minimum of 50 feet clearance.  These things can move far, fast, with no warning.  Never cross between equipment.  Getting coupled up is a gruesome affair and not always instant death.

Never step on top of the rail.  There is grease and or sludge all over the place and its a great way to slip and injure yourself, or hit your head on the other rail becoming incapacitated, be fore being decapitated by the next train along.

Rail wears over time.  On the inside sometimes they "feather" off flash that is razor sharp.  Bump it and you're looking at stitches at the least or severing and artery or vein.

Expect the movement of equipment on any track, in either direction, at any time, without warning.

Stay alert.  Sometimes equipment is uncoupled in motion.  Cars roll along in near silence and are on you before you know it.

The best way to step in front of a train is to go see a psychiatrist and talk about whatever is bugging you because stepping in front of a train is a permanent solution to a non-permanent problem.

Don't. You wouldn't be long for this world if you did.  Unfortunatly it happens too often mostly because people don't pay attention to their surroundings or are in a hurry or both.

It depends on if it is a freight train or a passenger train. Also if it is steam or deisel. Don't step in front of a classic steamer or we rail buffs will finish you off painfully and slowly if the train doesn't. Hope this helps.

I once worked for the Union Pacific Railroad as a Brakeman. There is only one way to step in front of a train-----------------Make sure it is stopped before doing so. And thats just the way it is ~~~
