  1. one way is to save your water gallon jugs.  Put it under the faucet while your waiting for the warm water to wash hands.  Also, i  don't know if You use a dehumidifier, but I have a hose running from mine to my watering can.

  2. I combine one chopped onion, three chopped carrots, two stalks minced celery, salt, pepper, a chicken carcass, butter, garlic, cumin seeds, cloves, and two quarts gray water to large pot and let that simmer for 2 hours.  It forms a stock for my  "Viva Zapata, salmonella tomato soup." Soup is good!!

  3. Cistern systems can be very expensive to install, but water barrels aren't.

55- to 60-gallon drums (once used to house olives or olive oil) are used as rain barrels. In your case, you can modify it to collect your grey water buy having your washer dump straight into it.

These modified barrels have connections for hoses so you can use the water and screens to prevent mosquito breeding. They're good not only in drought but also for protecting your area's watershed.

The prices vary hugely so be a thrifty shopper. Search for "rain barrel" at froogle.com to get some ideas. You can choose barrels based on what you need and what you're willing to pay.

Also, check your county's land use department and for local nonprofit conservation groups who may sell the barrels at a discount to help the water situation. For instance, my local nonprofit sells them for $75, but they are the same barrels that cost $225 from online retailers.

  4. Get a plumber who is trained to install such a system. Even if you are only going to use the water to water the garden and to flush toilets, the grey water must be filtered and pumped to where it will be used.
