Get yourself a political map with major geographical points. Then you can narrow your topics down.

If you have to learn where the Amazon River is, look at on the map. Look at where it is in relation to your home. Look at it in relation to a place you might want to visit, etc. etc. Learn many rivers in this fashion. Then have a friend quiz you. If you can close your eyes and still know where the Amazon River is in relation to other places, you're good to go!

You can't really study FOR a 15yo, they really have to do it themselves.

No, seriously, though, different people need to study different ways.  The SQ3R method is good -- but there are other methods.  Pay attention in class, take good notes, always do your homework, use lots of maps (draw them yourself because it cements it into the brain better), make sure you undertand all the vocabulary words, read carefully, get a partner to call out questions to each other, read and reread....  and don't wait until the last minute!
