When in lifeguard training, before you can take the class you are required to be able to swim out about 20 yards and then submerge under the water (7 to 12 feet deep) and retrieve a 10 pound brick, what is the best (and most effective) way to do this?

  1. Everyday after watever go down to the beach and slowly move down in the water each day. First day-3 feet Second Day-4 feet

Keep practising going deeper good luck

  2. Do a feet first surface dive. This will help you because you only do the feet first surface dives in class.

To do a feet first surface dive:

    1. Position yourself over the object

    2. Push your arms down to your side. This will cause you to lift out of the water.

    3. When you feel yourself lifting up, push your arms over your head. You will now be going down to the bottom.

    4. Keep lifting and lowering your arms until you reach the bottom.

The important thing is to keep your legs straight and together when you are doing this.

When you swim with the brick, I've found the breaststroke (whip or frog) kick works well. The strongest kick is an eggbeater kick. If you can, practice with the weight before you take the test.
