  1. Just the multiplication chart? My mom had me do it the old-fashioned way....copy, copy, copy and then she would quiz me. Ooops. I missed one- we would come up with a cheesy mnemonic device to remember it. Like 7 X 8=56 , oh...56=7 x 8 (5678) or the 9s table is very easy. Each adds up to nine and begins with one less the number. 4 x 9 = 36 (3+6=9)

This all happened in one night. I must have recopied my chart over and over. We said them aloud (auditory learning) wrote them down (visual) and we thought of hundreds of ways to memorize them. I don't have any more problems. It may take jus this for them to get it. You can also use notecards, but I suggest doing them by rote per section (2s tables, 3s tables, etc.) so they can see the patterns. The key to copying is to cover the last one so they can't see it and can't just shut off their brains and mindlessly copy them. You know they know them when they can do a table 3 times with no mistakes.

  2. I would recommend multiplication music tapes/CDs.  As a child I had one and my multiplication improved out of sight.  Every night before bed pop them on and have the kids listen to them once before bed.  It sounds corny but at about the same age I loved mine.   I knew the songs by heart and my mathematics improved out of sight.

  3. Children need 34 repetitions to put information into permanent memory. You have your work cut out.

I made my son memorize tables until he recognized which numbers belonged in what table. We did it with music, while marching around the room, in the car, while cooking, always one table at a time...

  4. put a copy of the multiplication tables on the wall by the bed.  They see it when they wake up and when they go to sleep.

This is how I learned my spelling words.  I use to dream about them and when I took my test I aced spelling.

  5. i had trouble with multiplucation untill 7th grade. you need to drill them every night, and come up with tricks to help them memorize them. I know there is the "9's one-less rule" in which the # times nine will always start with the # 1 less than the starting #----9 times 5= 45, 4 is one less than 5. there are other helpful ones, look them up!

  6. depends on how smart he is

  7. I'm not sure what you mean exactly by "school went to division".  But it sounds like the kids are doing division before they are solid with multiplication.

If they are forgetting ALL of them or most of them I would:

    1.  Go back to the beginning.  Show how multiplication works and do quizzes on all the multiplication tables starting from 1 and working to 9.

    2.  When doing these quizzes, make sure they are comprehensive.  On the 4x multiplication quiz, put questions on there for the 1x, 2x, and 3x tables as well.  They must accumulate information to be memorized - not throw it away.

Afterwards, I would also hold pop quizzes throughout the school year on the multiplication tables.  Be fun  - wear a black shirt or something on pop quiz day.

Only by testing accumulatively and often do the children get a solid foundation on their basic math skills that they will not forget.

  8. make flashcards and have them practice them for a few minutes everyday

  9. Go to the following web site and download the free version of the game called Timez Attack.

My son had difficulty remembering them and this game helped enormously. It's fantastic and fun.

  10. in my old class we did multiplication songs that might help.

    ex. 8 16 24 32 40 48 56 64 72 80 88 96

like this beat is my fair lady.

  11. ok if your kid is 10 and doesn't know how to multiply you need to move onto plan B. tutor maybe, if he is into music maybe you can get him hip-hop multiplication tables songs!!!!!
