What is the best way to train?

While I've never played a minute of serious rugby, I've always been interested in joining an active, top-notch club. There's a handful of local semi-pro clubs in my area that are recruiting right now and while I've been looking at joining up with one of them, I know that I need to get in better shape to truly be effective on the pitch.

What is the best way to go about training to secure myself a spot with a top-notch club? Should I focus more on cardio strength and stamina, or should I focus more on the brute strength of my muscles? Are there any specific diets/training programs that would work better than others?

Any advise that can be provided on the topic would be greatly appreciated!

  1. all depends on the position you want to play

    do both, so you can be a versatile player, and then the selectors can put you in various positions...which means you will be more valuable for them :)

    do normal gym work, for muscle strength with cardio...mid intensity 30 min runs

    just playing rugby is the best form of training...practise makes perfect (Y)

    tbh nowadays the players are more rounded...so even a winger will be very strong, so i suggest doing all of the training you suggested

  2. do both as they're equaly important but it does depend on the position u want to play if forward then do more upper body strength if back then focus more on stamina but like i said they're bothequally importrant

  3. Rugby is 70% ffitness, plyometric training and core stability a must, squats and squat some more. It obviously depends on what position you are playing for specific tailored training and diet, but the above applies to all would be serious rugby players.

  4. I agree with stamina.  Run, run, run!!  You're going to need to build up your endurance.
