I am applying for the police department in my home town and I will need to be able to run 1.5 miles in 17 minutes, but I do not want to be the last one to finish or finish just before the last second. I have been running to and from work which is 1.67 miles but about 3/4 the way through, my legs start to get weak and it becomes harder for me to finish. I have been doing the 1.67 miles in around 20 minutes since I walk a quarter of it. What are some good exercises to do so that I can make the 1.5 miles in under 15 minutes.

  1. That is not a fast pace. If you do any running you should be able to maintain a 10 minute per mile pace.

Running is the best way for you to improve at running.

If you can only run 3/4 of  your 1.67 mile distance now you can increase the amount of distance you run every couple of weeks.

When you must walk, then walk, and run again as soon as you feel you can.

Relax when you run, don't go out too fast, but maintain a decent pace.

Don't walk the rest of the distance once you have to walk.

  2. you should be able to walk that far in that amount of time

  3. 1.5 miles under 17 minutes? geez thats really slow i could walk that. just run 5-6 days a week long distances.

  4. Just keep running everyday. try to work up to 3 miles a day, then you can start dropping the pace a bit..If you get tired, and need to stop, finish your run at a brisk walking pace.

    good luck

  5. Start running every day, or ride a bike as fast as you can.  If you need to walk or slow down, then feel free to do it, but try to keep up a pace.

I was a crime scene detective in South Florida and before that, I was in the US Navy where I had to qualify at 12:30 for 1.5 miles cross-country (hills, trees, grass, sand dunes, etc.).  I was able to run it in 10:30 after about 6 weeks of continuous running and biking.

I ran in the mornings when it was cooler and bicycled in the afternoons each day for about 6 weeks.

1.5 miles in 17 minutes "should" be very easy.  Most law enforcement physical agility tests are not necessarily very difficult.  If you can make 1 mile in about 11 minutes, you'll be well within the 17 minute margin.  Most average build people can make 1 mile in about 6:30 to 7 minutes.  Put yourself into that range of 7 to 11 minutes and you'll see your fitness level.
