Question:

What is the best way to transfer sketches to canvas

Is graphite paper better than tracing with a pencil? I don't want the graphite to show up on the painted surface and am considering just tracing with a charcoal pencil even though there might be some smudging effect. I only need a loose idea of where everything will be placed.

Thanks all.

  1. I just tried what Bu said and hey it works. Don't buy any more graphite paper, honest dude, this works so much better and no smudges.

  2. Rather than use graphite paper you could also use chalk. I transfer designs all the time this way. Just chalk the backside of your sketch and then use it like graphite paper. Any excess chalk can be brushed away with either a soft dusting brush or use what I use, which is a make up brush for apply powder blush. This works much better. And if you are transferrring your design to a dark canvas, just use a light color chalk. I use sidewalk chalk instead of pastels, because it comes off much easier.

  3. I would totally digitize the sketch, upload it, get a projector, and beam it onto the canvas, but hey, I'm a geek. With a projector.

But why I really answered, I was wondering if can we examine your creative outpourings in a place like DeviantArt or somesuch?
