What is the best way to travel from San Jose to Los Angeles and back?

I am looking for something other than car and air travel. Something like railway where I can relax and use the time for something productive. Also something that travels direct without having to change modes of transportation in between, and someting that is most cost effective.

The train is your best bet as it does offer you a sense of comfort with varying amenities or for the real low budget an express Greyhound Bus.

Well if you can afford it a Limo is nice you can relax in the back, then when you get there you have already attained celebrity status.

Use a bus like Greyhound. Usually the most cost effective.

Amtrak is always a good idea, BUT consider this: (I live in San Jose, used to live in San Luis Obispo, and used Amtrak to visit family in So.Cal) I never got on a train anywhere north of Santa Barbara, they have buses. If I wanted a bus, I'd save money and take Greyhound, right? Anyway, the only way to get a fare that will let you board a train and get off a train without having to torture yourself with the unnecessary tours the bus will take you on is to BOOK FAR FAR FAR in advance! That's what my dad did for my grandparents and it worked... I think they call that fare the Coast Starlight; anything other than Amtrak's Coast Starlight and you might as well take Greyhound.
