What is the best way to travel from Santiago to Lima (not by plane)?

I'm traveling on my own from Santiago and Lima in July and just wondered what was the best way to do it? I don't really want to go by plane, and I know buses run, but not sure which ones to get. Any thoughts?

I think bus is your only option. They have really good buses in both Chile and Peru. You may have to change at Arica and go across by local bus to Arequipa.  It definitely can be done and done very comfortably.  A long trip though.  Arequipa would make a good layover for a day or two.  Or any of the cities in northern Chile if you like the beach.

Bus is your only option as train travel is not available from Santiago. You can go direct but it's a long way. Take a bus to Arica and break the trip into two legs.
