  1. The best way is to take the Marco Polo train - Intercity night train (ICN). You'll cost you less as a daily trip since you'll travel during the night and you'll be saving both time for yr next day's visit to Venice and further money for one night less in hotel. It takes about 6,30 hours.

Here's the link to the Italian Railways System (Trenitalia) with all info on timetables, ticketing, seat reservation, rates, etc.

    http://www.trenitalia.it/en/index.html

I've researched options for you. Here they are :

1.- The Intercity night train (ICN 774) also named "Marco Polo" leaves from Rome - Tiburtina station at 22:50 and arrives to Venice Santa Lucia (VE S.L. it's the main station)  at 05:24 -

Standard rate is € 49,50 in first class and € 33,50 in second class.

2.- The daytime Eurostar trains (ES) cost € 74,00 in first class and € 51,00 in the second class (standard rates).Seat reservation (also possible on line) is mandatory for ES trains. The trip is lasting abt. 4,30 hours.

3.- The daytime Intercity trains (IC) are slower than above ES but not necessary to make seat reservation and are cheaper.

Cost is € 56,00 in first class and € 41,50 in second class (standard rates).

It takes about 5,30 hours. These trains are mostly stopping at Venezia Mestre. From there you'll need to take a train (there are a lot of, average any 10 minutes) to reach Venezia S.Lucia station that's the last station to Venice (Mestre is located on the mainland). It's an additional 10-15 minutes trip and cost will be around € 1.-

Have a nice trip and enjoy Italy...!!

  2. You can get a direct train from Rome to Venice.  There are several per day and it takes about 4.5 hours.  I don't know how much it costs but a good website to check out would be www.raileurope.com

This site has a schedule search which tells you exactly how long and when the trains leave.

For prices you might have to check out the Italian rail website, rail italia.  Google it.

  3. I just returned from Italy.  Don't buy your rail tickets online in the US.  If you go to the Termini the day before you can buy a Eurostar ticket for 33 Euro.  It took about two hours.
