  1. Be careful giving out private info about your name and mothers maiden name

  2. FamilySearch.org

  3. Ancestry.com is the most popular if you don't mind paying a fee.  There are hundreds of  free sites which are very resourceful (just a little more leg work).

Here are some link to free sites that I use all the time:

This link is to the "Mormon site" which has family tree software you can download as well as loads of records:

Its amazing how many people find their ancestors in family trees at this site. Not all family trees provide sources to their data, so if you do find a connection, be sure to verify that their facts are correct by searching for records.

Here is another great site with hundreds of links and detailed information on just about everything.

I would strongly suggest first going to Ted Pack's site for great advise on getting started, as well as useful  tips on how, where, what and what not to do.  Believe me, this will save you a lot of time and frustration.

    Good Luck in your search!

  4. DON'T pay money to Ancestry, they don't know how to cancel payments to your credit card.  But their message boards, available for free, must create an account (free), are great.  You can post questions to your locality and many people read them.  Make sure your family name and town is in the post so those skimming through can see it and it's found faster, easier by those that would know.  And there's familysearch.org.

EDIT TO ADD:  The guy below my post says something about maiden names and other personal info:  Those sites filter out info on living people, you can see it if you posted it, but others can't unless you actually hit the override button on each and every individual.

  5. The Mormon church keeps an extensive online database -- the largest of its kind, I believe.

  6. ancestry.com  It can be very disorganized at times but they have a lot of helpful information.
