I always use Google Earth the 'ruler' and then 'path'.

use the Travel for london (www.TFL.GOV.uk) website and use search that tells you how to get somewhere.  Go into the advaned options and turn off all trains and buses etc and just leave on walking.  it gives you the distance and approx time.

When you go on the site its the search on he right of th page fairly near the top called journey planner.  You will have to turn off all the types of trains and turn on the cycle option.

If this doesnt work well you cn use google earth to measure distances to give you an estimate.
