  2. khandala, lonavla, alibag or kashid beach would be great choices.

  3. If you are travelling by your own vehicle, there are several places around Mumbai.

Alibaug is nearer Mumbai and one of the best seaside places. But enjoying seas during monsoon season is very very dangerous and risky. Better if you do not venture in turbulent and volatile seas. But then what is the fun in visiting Alibaug or any other sea side places? Still I say, if you can enjoy the seas and gutsy winds from ashore, go there.

Hill sides/stations are great to be in monsoon season. Khandala and Lonavala are always great but crowded with city people - both from Mumbai and Pune.

Matheran ( get down at Neral on Central Railway - take a cab - walk for a long time to reach Matheran ) is good, too. But you with a 9 month old baby, all that travel may be just too tedious.

A little bit away from Mumbai is a splendid hill station of Mahabaleshwar. About 6 to 7 hours drive on Konkan highway will take you there. Nice and green environment, several accomodation and food options, breathtaking sights around the hill station provides a nice outing even during rains. Luxury buses go there, too. ( if you find travel and drive your own vehicle tiring ). Panchgani is nearby. Old Mahabaleshwar has got ancient temples. Pratapgad - a splendid fort from King Shivaji's time is worth a visit. If you can travel on other side ( Pune side ) Wai is a great old place- visit a old Ganesha temple - hugh stone idol of Lord Ganesh on the banks of river Krishna. If you wish to enjoy a bit long weekend - 3 days - this is the place.

Travel directions to Mahabaleshwar : From Mumbai travel till Panvel ( through Chembur - Vashi - Belapur et al ). From Panvel get on Mumbai to Goa highway. Pen and Wadkhal are important towns. At Wadkhal take a left turn and keep on the highway ( going strainght will take you to Alibaug ). Nagothane, Kolad, Indapur, Mangaon and Mahad are towns to cross. After Mahad, Poladpur will come ( about 10 kms.). From Poladpur leave the Goa highway and take a left turn. It passes through the ghat sections for about 45 kms or so and you will be in Mahabaleshwar. Other way of travel is through Pune side but it takes longer time. Kokan highway is lush green and less crowded.

    Wish you happy holidays.
