What is the best year for a Ford Crown Victoria?

Looking to purchase a 1995 and up Crown Vic. I understand from a friend that these run a minimum of 400k miles, which is very good.

in 95 and newer you will find the 4.6l, they are NOT that good of a motor, And a poor design at that. I highly doubt you will ever get 400k out of a 4.6 in a big heavy car.

It will start burning oil really bad around 180k miles.

In my opinion, i would buy a 94 or older, you will get the 5.0 engine, which is much more durable

I do work on police cars, and the 4.6ls get replaced ALOT(it could be from abusive driving of the police) but the 5.0's and chevy 5.7s lasted longer and stayed together longer than a 4.6l will ever dream of.

I own a 2002 Grand Marquis with the 4.6 V8 and it runs great. The only repair done since 2002 and 80,000 miles is a sensor a few weeks ago. The Crown Vic and Marquis are great cars. I have a friend with a limo service with all 2002 Crown Vics with close to 350,000 miles and never rebuilt or replaced.

Of course proper maintanance and driving can make any car last a long time. Mileage on the car is from 17 mpg in the city and 26 on the highway with an 18 gallon tank. Get the one with duel exhaust.

To my mind, the previous generation- say 88' to 91'- were better overall, higher quality components, indestructible 302  engine, and richer looking.  If you can, shop the Florida market, these as well as the newer generation- 1992 onward- were a favorite of the "retirees to the Sunshine". Not unusual to find very well maintained low mileage units. All, except for fleet units, are great buys. And they're not hard to tell apart.

400K???? lol never...lucky to get 200K...5.0 is better than 4.6

Well, the newer the better.

You'll probably find most of the older models have high km's, likely because they are ex cop cars/taxis, etc.

It depends how much you're willing to spend I suppose.
