  1. My advice is to learn a style that is simple and effective.  I wish very much that I could have the years back that I wasted training at "McDojos".

    Muay Thai is a powerful and effective form.  I'd start with that if there are any schools near you.

  2. Taekwondo is a good martial art if it is combined with others such as Muay Thai for far strikes and close combat or with Judo and/or Aikido for throws or breaking bones.

  3. Taekwondo is a martial art, and like all martial arts it is neither better nor worse than others.

    If you need help know which one is right for you try this:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martial_art...

  4. taekwondo is a martial art. karate, kungfu, taekwondo, muay thai,etc. are all martial arts.

    there really is no one best martial art. there is just the martial art and the teacher that is best for you. and the teacher is more important than the art. any martial artist worth his salt will tell you that it isn't the martial art that makes the martial artist, it's the martial artist that makes the martial art.

    look for good qualities in your teacher that you agree with. make sure he isn't overly critical, and doesn't yell at the class for little things. a teacher who punishes often is not a very good teacher, because the punished children will become preoccupied with thoughts of revenge and will not learn anything. another reason is that critical comments such as "you're stupid. you'll never learn this technique." can permanently damage the self-esteem and self-confidence of the student. they'll think "hey, what if he's right?" then next time the student goofs, he'll think "aw man, he's right. I am stupid. I'll never learn this."

    also look out for shady business practices, such as charging for belt tests. especially if there are more than ten belts. this is a common tactic mcdojos use to take your money. i once saw a school that charged FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS to test for black belt. did anyone ever fail? no.

    I could go on for pages about this, but I don't want to make you dependent on me for information. or take up more of your time. i advise you to make a list of traits you would want in a teacher. that will help you visualise, and help you choose which is best for you. good luck choosing!

    Edit: to juniper;

    I don't believe that you can waste time. even training at a mcdojo, to me, can have some good. true, it is better to train at a legitimate school, but a mcdojo will still teach you life lessons, and is still a good experience. and now, after training at a mcdojo, you can appreciate training at a good school much more. this is my opinion, not absolute truth. take it, look at it, take what resonates with you, and get rid of what doesn't. even if you don't agree, at least you'll know what you don't agree with, which leads you to what you do. either way, I will have brought you to your truth.

  5. taekwondo is a martial art... a combat sport to be exact

  6. Tae Kwan Do is a Martial Art.

    It doesn't matter much what you learn, but whom you learn from.

    Find a school with a average balance of 100$ or so. Try a free class and see how you like it.

    Google your county name and then "martial arts" and you might see results in websites.

    Good luck
