  1. Java

    1. Platform independent

    2. Robust

    3. Scalability is high.

    4. Needs programming knowledge.

    .NET

    ====

    1. Platform dependent(Can be used on the Windows platform)

    2. Easy to use IDEs.(So that you can drag n drop components)

    3. Better flexibility in working.

    I suggest you start working with Java. It is a powerful language, which can be used for developing enterprise applications as well as web applications.

    The job opportunities are vast. You can work as a

    1. Java programmer

    2. Web content developer(JSP, Servlets, JSF(Java Server Faces))

    3. Enterprise Application Developer (Enterprise Java Beans)

    Once you've mastered the language(i mean with the basics), you shouldn't stop there and go ahead with Core Java as well.

    Hope all this information helps you and if it does, please mark my answer as the best one. Happy Programming !! :-)

  2. C++

    Not an option?  Well, if Google makes a dent in the browser market with Chrome, personally I'd go with Java.  Otherwise, .NET probably ain't going nowhere any time soon, so you could go with that one just as well, too.

    Java and C# (which is basically .NET) are pretty close to the same thing in terms of language syntax, anyway.

    I think .NET makes things a tad easier for application development, but it's basically Windows-only (well, there is Mono unofficially for Linux and I think Mac, but it's never going to be comparable to .NET for windows...).  If it's true multi-platform development you want, though, Java is the answer.
