  1. I agree with you :) I hate seeing adorable, lovable "mutts" sitting in shelter cages while purebred dogs are sold. Some purebred dogs are more prone to health issues than mixed breeds. From my point of view, "mutts" are very smart! I have a Heinz 57 myself, and he is very intelligent and cute :D

If you're considering getting a dog, DEFINITELY go to the animal shelter and get one :]

  2. to each his own ok? i prefer the pure breeds cause i think they are smarter and i happen to like them i have had both and both i have had were ok. you take which one you prefer. there are alot in shelters that are pure breeds but with no papers you won't know.

  3. Pedigreed pets are good for showing and breeding.

So most people who make a point of getting pedigreed pet will use it for those purposes.

My rabbit is a purebred, but I didn't get him for that reason.

  4. It doesn't matter to me. I have both purebred and mutts. If I am looking for a specific breed sure I will get a pedigree animal. But I would never deny an animal a loving home based on whether it is pedigree or mutt.

  5. I've had both and they each have their positive and negative points. Currently, all I have is rescue mutts, but, I'd like to do AKC trials so my next dog will be pedigreed so that I can do that.

About 6-8 millions dogs and cats go through animal shelters on a yearly basis in the US. There are about 61 million dogs and 74 million owned cats in the US. More cats then dogs end up in animal shelters. Probably about 3 million dogs go through US animal shelters every year. If every pet owner kept their dog for at least 12 years, only 20% of owned dogs would have to be adopted from shelters to make animals shelters 'no-kill'.

In other words, there's plenty of room for purebred dogs. The problem is that often people who have purebred dogs want ONLY purebred dogs and ONLY want them from puppies. If every one who owned more then one dog owned one animal shelter mutt, there wouldn't be any dogs in animal shelters.

I volunteer and foster, but, I want to be able to own one purebred, well bred, dog from a puppy on up. I've rescued 8 mutt dogs and 10 shelter cats so far not counting over 200 fosters I've had over the years. I cannot help that other people are not willing to get a shelter dog. I've more then done my part so far and will continue to do my part. I can't feel guilty all the time because other people won't do anything, I also can't fault people for wanting to buy a purebred now and then. There's something to be said for knowing the characteristics bred into your dog..
