Believe it or not, Katrina really wasn't that strong, it was where it landed. Katrina made landfall at a Cat 3. The biggest hurricane in the world was actually a Typhoon in the pacific. It was named Typhoon Tip. The wind speeds reached 190 mph. If you mean just hurricanes in general, i would have to say hurricane Camille back in 1969. That was a Cat 5 at landfall.
