I have heard that 1,000 feet in length (more than 3 football fields) / about 80,000 tons is as big as they get.

The largest ship specifically built for service in the Great Lakes is  "Paul R. Tregurtha".  It's overall length is 1013' 6" and was originally launched as "William J. Delancey" but later renamed.  She was rated to carry 68,000 long tons (69,092 metric tons).  This large self-unloader has held the title of “Queen of the Lakes” longer than any other lake boat.
