  1. To be brief, there are two main differences.

    First, latitude (and directly related, the climate).  Tropical rain forests are generally found closer to the equator and radiate out to about 23 degrees north and south.  Temperate rain forests are found generally between 25 and 60 degrees latitude north and south.  Of course, the temperatures are warmer yearly and more constant near the equator than outside the tropics.

    Second, precipitation.  Tropical rain forests get quite a bit of precipitation, some places as much as 300 inches per year.  Temperate rain forests get between 30-60 inches of rain per year, on average.  The Appalachian range is a good example of a temperate forest climate in the U.S.
