  1. No definite reason but here's a theory I  like:

    "In cultures in which men place a high value on virginity in a bride, such as some very traditional cultures, anything that provided "some" evidence of virginity (reliable or not) would enhance a woman's chances of acquiring a husband and reproducing. Therefore, even if the hymen was a genetic mutation originally, women who possessed one would be more likely to marry and reproduce (passing this gene/trait on to their female offspring) than those lacking the hymen. So there would be an evolutionary advantage that would result in greater relative reproduction rates among the hymened. Sort of like the spots on a peacock..."
