What is the blue flickers in the ocean at night?

OKay a few summers ago I went to Bolsa Chica State beach in hunnington california and my friends and I were there at night and we saw blue in the ocean it was like blue glimmers of electric blue light... what is that ?

Phosphorescent sea critters like plankton and other simple animals.  Stir them up and they glow.

It's pretty cool.  I did a night Kayak run a couple weeks ago on Tomales Bay (Google up Point Reyes).  It was dead calm and a bit overcast (really dark).  Our paddle strokes and bow wakes made for a lovely show.
