The easiest answer to this question is that it is a different look at the idea of Body Snatchers - aliens taking over humans bodies. It is a very good book and quite interesting, especially about the Souls (those are the Body Snatching aliens). It does have quite a good bit of romance in it. Essentially, it is about how a Soul reacts when she leaves society and finds actual humans.
