  1. It's caused by not spraying the appropriate chemicals at the appropriate time. Next year, find out what to spray and when.  Most fruit trees need to be sprayed every 2 weeks from pre-bloom to harvest.

I think you mean apple scab.  It appears as dark brown or black spots on the apple and can get a crusty texture.  Is is caused by a fungus and is not harmful to eat.  It can start in early spring and form on blossoms.  That can prevent them from setting fruit.  If it forms on small apples it can stop them from developing into mature fruit.  Orchards spray their trees with a fungucide called Captan to fight it.  In the northeast it is a big problem this year because of all the rain we have been getting.
